Admission to the Conference
The 9th annual East Africa Com in Nairobi brought together senior executives from the telecoms, media and ICT sector from the whole region. Over two days of debates they defined strategies for a changing market, networked with their peers and did business.
The main subjects were how networks must improve to support data requirements, and what services to develop to support growth in the market. The opening keynote debate also looked at the changing telecoms, media and ICT ecosystem and the impact of new players on services, customer needs and operators’ revenues.
The first day of the event focused mostly on broadband and connectivity, from mobile with the dawn of LTE in the region and from fibre and satellite developments. Connectivity has improved vastly in the region in the past few years but there is still much work to be done. Network developments must be done cost-effectively. Technology improvements (particularly in satellite) bring operators new options in their network strategies for the region.
The second day looked at new services and partnerships to deliver them to the customers. Speakers praised the level of innovation to be found in the region and highlighted the importance of affordability of data services, both in terms of data pricing and of devices. The sessions covered the services that are most likely to impact data growth in the region: content, mobile money, e-health, TV, mobile marketing and apps. Some key words kept being mentioned when discussing how to make services successful: affordability, user-friendliness and simplicity.
Meanwhile the adjacent exhibition was all about networking and business meetings. Over 30 exhibitors participated to East Africa Com to show their products and solutions for the market. Speed Networking sessions took place during the morning coffee breaks, bringing together 20+ VIP guests from the region’s operators to meet solutions providers and vendors. East Africa Com was once again a great showcase for the innovation and entrepreneurship to be found in the region. Next year’s event (to take place in Nairobi on 20-21 May 2014) will again focus on how to make networks more reliable and affordable in order to provide relevant services for the region’s users.
